June is Pride Month

Pride Month is a month-long celebration that recognizes the LGBTQ+ community and their contributions to society. It is a time to acknowledge the challenges faced by this community and to stand in solidarity with their fight for equality, acceptance, and human rights. Pride Month is a joyful and colorful display of love, unity, and resilience, with events and activities that promote inclusivity, educate the public, and celebrate the diversity of sexual orientations and gender identities.

Pride Month is traditionally celebrated in June around the world, including in the United Kingdom. In 2023, Pride Month will take place from June 1st to June 30th. This extended period allows for a wide range of events, parades, marches, and discussions to take place, providing opportunities for LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies to come together and make their voices heard.

How can I get involved in Pride Month 2023? Getting involved in Pride Month allows you to actively support the LGBTQ+ community and contribute to a more inclusive society. Here are some ways you can participate:

  1. Attend Pride Parades and Events: Check local listings for Pride parades, festivals, and events happening in the area. Participate in the vibrant celebrations, join marches, and immerse yourself in the supportive and inclusive atmosphere. These events are an opportunity to show solidarity and celebrate diversity while having a great time.
  2. Educate Yourself and Others: Take the time to learn about the history, struggles, and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community. Read books, watch films, listen to podcasts, and engage in conversations that foster understanding and empathy. Share your knowledge with others, particularly those who may be less familiar with LGBTQ+ issues, to promote acceptance and awareness.
  3. Support LGBTQ+ Organizations: Consider donating to LGBTQ+ charities and organizations that work towards promoting equality and providing support to the community. Volunteer your time or skills to help organize events or initiatives that uplift and empower LGBTQ+ individuals.
  4. Advocate for LGBTQ+ Rights: Use your voice to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and equality in your community and beyond. Engage in conversations, challenge discriminatory attitudes and behaviors, and support legislative changes that protect the rights and well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals.
  5. Show Support on Social Media: Use your online platforms to show support for Pride Month. Share uplifting messages, stories of LGBTQ+ individuals, and resources related to LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance. Use hashtags such as #PrideMonth2023 and #LoveIsLove to amplify the message of inclusivity and love.

Stay Safe This Summer:   Avoid these five-common summer-related accidents and illnesses

Sun Safety – Spending too much time in the sun can put people at risk for sunburn and skin cancer. It is important to use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30+ and reapply every two hours. Try to stay in shaded areas, wear sunglasses, and avoid intense activity on hot days.

Dehydration – During hot and humid weather, people are at higher risk of dehydration, and heat-related illnesses, including cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.  To prevent dehydration, drink plenty of fluids throughout the day and increase your intake if exercising.

Burns – Use caution when in close proximity of open flames such as campfires or grills. Please remember that synthetic clothing melts when it gets hot. Don’t ruin your new fleece jacket by getting too close to a campfire or grill! If you plan on cooking on the fire, make sure to have cooking tools that are long enough, so there is a safe distance between you and the fire.  If you want to see fireworks, go to a public show put on by experts. Sparklers can reach 1,200 F and cause third-degree burns.

Outdoor Injuries – Wear proper safety gear during activities such as biking, skateboarding, and water activities. Wearing the proper gear drastically reduces the chances of getting injured.  As a result, you can focus on the activity and not worry about accidents.

Food Poisoning – Rates of food poisoning increase in summer months because bacteria can grow faster in warmer weather. Eating food left in the Danger Zone (40°F to 140°F) for too long can make people sick. Keep raw meat, poultry, and seafood chilled in an insulated cooler or fridge below 40 degrees until ready to grill. Place leftovers in the insulated cooler or fridge within two hours of cooking – or one hour if it’s above 90 degrees outside.

Have a great summer vacation!
