Rising 6th Grade FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions by Rising Aki 6th Grade Families

  • Address: 
    • 7201 Beacon Ave. S

  • 2-year interim site, 8th grade year will be in the modernized and new Aki!!!! 
  • Transportation  
    • The Walk Zone will be 1-mile surrounding Aki @ OVA. 
    • Bus routes will be added for everyone outside of the 1-mile radius. 
    • Snail mail will be sent to families about bus routes, including pick up and drop off locations. This will occur about 2-3 weeks before school starts. 
  • Drop Off – in front of school on Beacon Ave. 
  • Pick Up – park in the median sports between northbound and southbound Beacon Ave. 
  • The Main Office is in Building A on the corner of Beacon Ave. and S. Myrtle St. and faces Beacon Ave. All families and visitors will check in here, before entering any other school space. 

On the day before in the Source or day or in 1st Period (all students will receive a paper copy) 

Doors open at 8:15am in the A building (facing Beacon) 

Students enter and head to the cafeteria 

Buses usually arrive between 8:30-45am 

Making friends can be daunting, but there are plenty of groups at Aki for students to join and meet likeminded people! We have after-school sports and clubs, affinity groups, lunch groups, student leadership opportunities, and more!

  • Students will have lunch with their grade level 
  • Lunch is 30 minutes starting in the cafeteria. Afterwards students will have 15 minutes outside on the field for socializing  
  • Aki is a closed campus, as are all Middle Schools in SPS 
  • Breakfast and lunch are provided for free 
  • Food served is similar to what is served in elementary

No, per the district policy mobile phones and other electronics are turned off and away for the day

Yes, if they are apart of a student’s 504 or IEP plan

Exploratory classes are mixed grade levels 6,7,8  

Some are semester long and some are year long 

Aki offers…

  • Intro Orchestra – Year long 
  • Intro Band – year long 
  • Intermediate Orchestra – year long + music experience 
  • Intermediate Band – year long + music experience 
  • Experience Music – semester long 
  • Theater – semester and year long 
  • Beginning Art – semester long 
  • Advanced Art – year long 
  • STEAM Innovation Lab – semester or year long 
  • Kingmakers – year long (mentorship program with Black male students, it is referral based through Mr. Bradford. If interested, please reach out to Mr. Bradford and Ms. Bogrow)  

PE is a requirement so students will automatically be enrolled and will not list that as a preference. 

A link is on your 5th graders Source account. Ms. Jolgren, our Data Registrar, is available to support. 

Student preferences are taken into account and students will not always receive their first choice. 

Field Trips are planned by the 6th grade team and vary from year-to-year

Some past field trips have been to the Pacific Science Center, carnival games on the field, etc.

Each student will have 7 class periods per day  

1 – Language Arts (Reading) 

2 – Science  

3 – Math  

LUNCH 

4 – Language Arts (Writing) 

5 – PE / Exploratory  

6 – Math Empowerment  

7 – History  

On Wednesdays, students have an additional class, their “8th” period, called Advisory

Advisory is a homeroom-like class where students receive school-wide communication, high school and beyond instruction, and social emotional learning

Advisory is only on Wednesdays

School staff may call, send an email, or use Talking Points (texting application)

Weekly communication about broader school information is sent through the School Communicator (email) 

Families can sign up for Schoology and the Source to access information about their student’s academic progress, attendance, and assignments  

Fall: Girls Soccer, Co-Ed Ultimate Frisbee 

  • Winter: Boys & Girls Basketball  

Spring: Girls Volleyball, Boys Soccer, Co-Ed Track

Some teachers may assign homework, but generally any work sent home is work not completed in class
